Fear of a new crisis: a delegation of American lawmakers visited Taiwan Israel today

Tensions between Beijing and the Democratic Territory may escalate again after five members of Congress arrived in Taipei and met with the president • A previous visit by the Speaker of the House of Representatives caused a peak in military tensions in the region

Tensions again in the Far East: a delegation of American lawmakers arrived in Taiwan today (Sunday), a few days after huge exercises by the Chinese army that took place in response to the visit of the Speaker of the American House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to the democratic territory.

The delegation of lawmakers, led by Senator Ed Markey of the state of Massachusetts, is expected to meet the president, Tsai Ing-wen, and attend an official event attended by the foreign minister and other officials, in a move that has angered Beijing.

The American Institute in Taiwan, which is hosting the lawmakers, announced that the purpose of the visit is to "discuss US-Taiwan relations, regional security issues, trade and investment, global supply chains, climate change and other important issues."

The media in the territory celebrated the visit of the legislators as another achievement for the Taiwanese diplomat after Pelosi's visit and following the series of deer exercises carried out by China in order to deter Western leaders from doing similar acts.

The Chinese embassy in Washington responded to the visit and said: "Members of the legislature should act in accordance with the American policy of 'One China'. The visit proves once again that the United States is not interested in stability in the region and does nothing to prevent conflict between the parties, when it interferes in China's internal affairs."

The Taiwanese government responded happily to the visit and a statement published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taipei reads: "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sincerely welcomes the visit, at a time when China continues to escalate tensions in the region. The American Congress has once again sent a heavy-weight delegation to Taiwan, demonstrating friendship and fearlessness of China's threats and intimidation."

The authorities in Taiwan announced last week today (Sunday) that 66 Chinese planes penetrated the country's airspace as part of maneuvers by the Chinese army and navy near the country's borders, as part of the tremendous tensions in the region that followed the visit of the Speaker of the American House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to Taipei last week.

The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense also reported that 14 Chinese warships were maneuvering in the Taiwan Strait, near the country's territorial waters.

In addition, it is claimed that the Chinese Air Force carried out a simulated depth attack and practiced missile firing.

11 missiles were fired during the exercise, according to the Chinese Defense Ministry.

The government in Beijing sees Taiwan as a rebel province and refuses to accept its conduct as an independent country, this after Taipei seceded from China at the end of the country's civil war in 1949. China even tried in the past to carry out a military operation to restore Taiwan to its control, but fear of American intervention prevented an extensive Chinese operation on the island.
