Five people were killed and 16 injured in an explosion in the Ecuadorean state of Guayaquil.
"The mercenaries of organized crime gangs attacked us today with explosives," Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo was quoted by AFP as saying, considering what happened as a "declaration of war on the state."
According to relief agencies, the explosion, whose circumstances have not yet been clarified by the security forces, destroyed eight homes and two cars as well.
