Forest fires raging in a number of European countries since last January have caused record damage and affected more than 660,000 hectares.
France is currently witnessing the most dangerous fires in 16 years, according to data released today by the European Information System on Forest Fires, with German, Polish and Austrian firefighters participating in extinguishing them, especially two successive large fires that broke out in the Gironde in the southwest of the country.
The data indicated that the fires destroyed 663,776 hectares of forests in the European Union compared to 2006.
In turn, Slovenia, which does not have aircraft to fight the fires, has asked Croatia to help put out its own fires.
In the German capital, Berlin, a major fire broke out last week from a police ammunition depot in a drought-stricken forest, while the capital is still increasingly threatened by its vast forest areas.
