The government will discuss at the meeting the appointment of the retired judge, even though it is a transitional government • The appointment of Mazuz is intended to qualify the appointment of the next Chief of Staff

The government is expected to approve today (Sunday) the appointment of retired Chief Justice Meni Mazuz as the chairman of the advisory committee for the appointment of senior officials, as first published in "Israel Hayom".

Mazuz's appointment will be made for a particularly long period of eight years, despite the fact that this is a transitional government that should exercise restraint, and as a general rule avoid their appointments influencing the work of the governments that will come after it.

The controversial appointment was approved by the legal adviser to the government, attorney Gali Beharev Miara. This is despite the fact that only less than a year ago, Mazuz served as one of the three people recommending her for the position she currently holds - an issue that raises real concerns about a conflict of interest. Against the background of these circumstances, the "Lavi" organization to the administration Tikin and Civil Rights petitioned the High Court against the appointment of Mazuz to the position, which carries with it a salary.

"This appointment should not be approved during the transitional government period, due to the 'prejudicial' characteristics of the decision," the petition reads.

"Why won't the government refrain from appointing a permanent chairman of the Advisory Committee for Appointments to Senior Positions, and settle for appointing an acting chairman for the urgent appointment of the Chief of Staff?" Judge Yosef Elron ordered the Ombudsman to respond to the petition by August 22, but chose not to freeze the expected appointment.

As mentioned, Mazuz's appointment is intended to legally qualify the appointment of the next Chief of Staff by the Transitional Government, and this is based on an opinion submitted by Beharve Meyara to the government and agreed with the Minister of Defense's wishes on the matter. On the other hand, Beharve Meyara stated that although the Transitional Government has the authority to appoint Under the current circumstances, the Chief of Staff does not have the authority to appoint a permanent commander for the IDF waves. In light of this decision, Galit Elstein, acting station commander appointed by the Minister of Defense and who is interested in continuing her tenure, will remain in her position for the time being.

These decisions are part of a series of opinions by Beharev Miara on significant issues, which corresponded to the wishes of the cabinet ministers and the prime minister, including the controversial decision to allow Prime Minister Lapid to order the departure of the "Dawn" operation without obtaining the approval of the cabinet.

Beharve Miara decided that there was no real risk of degenerating into war by going into operation, and therefore there was no need for the approval of the cabinet.

The chairman of Meretz, Minister Nitzan Horowitz, resented the decision and criticized it harshly, which he slammed into Lapid.
