The Plantsch wants to become independent of fossil fuels.

Extensive conversion work is therefore planned during the maintenance period.

Schongau – After the summer holidays, inspection time is traditionally announced in the Schongauer Plantsch.

Means: All swimming pools are emptied and cleaned, necessary repair and conversion work is done.

This year, the main focus is on becoming independent of fossil primary energy sources.

And 100 percent, as Plantsch boss Andreas Kosian explains.

Everything that is currently still operated with gas - district heating and electricity are also used in the Plantsch - is to be converted to electrical energy.

"In the short to medium term, even more of the energy should be generated from photovoltaics than before," says Kosian.

As early as the 2022/2023 winter season, the pool should be able to do without gas.

"The conversion has nothing to do with the energy crisis," says Kosian.

As early as the second week of the Ukraine war in February, for example, the effect lights were switched off and replaced with electronic devices at the beginning of March.

In addition, numerous energy-saving measures have been taken, whereby the consumption of gas/district heating and electricity could be saved, "so that the operation could and can be carried out up to now and also until the end of the summer season without any noticeable drop in temperature for the guests".

According to Kosian, electric heaters for the panorama sauna and the log cabin sauna were ordered in the spring so that the replacement can take place in the revision.

The renovation work begins on September 13th.

From then on, the Plantsch will be closed for several weeks.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.)

Plantsch Schongau: Up until now, gas has been the most economical energy source

“Until the beginning of the war, gas was by far the most economical energy source for sauna operation.

The changeover is therefore solely for reasons of security of supply and, as long as the electricity cannot be generated by the company itself, will also result in a deterioration in the operating result," says Kosian.

In the medium term, however, this should change when an economically working PV area is added.

At the board meeting in July, all steps were taken to expand the PV system in Plantsch as quickly as possible.

However, an unexpected problem arose: "Unfortunately, the inventory revealed severe damage to the tin roofs, so that extensive roof renovation must take place before the PV system can be built," says Kosian.

Plantsch Schongau: Graduated plan for energy shortages in winter

Despite all the preparations, energy shortages are expected in winter and plans have been drawn up in several stages to take account of the respective situation.

Which measures are to be implemented must be decided “if the type of necessary or possibly legally required restrictions are known”.

Kosian says: "We act according to the principle: Measures with a high savings potential before measures with little effect but a major impact on the well-being of the guests." In other words: In case of doubt, it would be better to shut down an entire part of the facility, such as the heated outdoor pool, before the temperature of the water and air is lowered in the covered pool areas.

Also because the latter would harm small children and fellow citizens with impaired health (e.g. rheumatics).
