An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit northeastern Papua New Guinea.
The US Geological Survey said in a statement carried by Sputnik Agency today that "an earthquake struck at a depth of 51.6 km under the seabed and 82 km northeast of Lae city in Papua New Guinea, without reports of material or human losses."
Papua New Guinea is located in the so-called Ring of Fire, an area that extends along the coast of the Pacific Ocean and is characterized by high seismic and volcanic activity, and this region includes 90 percent of the world's active volcanoes.
