"Breaking Bad" is considered one of the masterpiece series of the last decade, as is its spin-off series, "Trust Sol", and tomorrow it will air its final episode.

Especially in his honor, creators Vince Gillian and Peter Gold were interviewed on the podcast Inside the Gilliverse, where he revealed that they had previously toyed with the idea of making a game based on the "Albuquerque Universe", where both series take place.

During a round of questions with the viewers, Gillian was asked if he ever thought of turning Breaking Bad or Trust Soul into a GTA-style computer game, and Gillian's answer was surprising: "I'm not too much of a computer game person, but how can you not know GTA? I I remember saying to the two gentlemen with whom I had a conversation on the subject, who now run Apple: 'Who owns the rights to GTA? Don't you have some module based on Breaking Bad?'. It still makes sense to me. It never came out."

Although we never got a AAA game in the Albuquerque universe, Gillian revealed that they had a lot of fun with the concept and some of their ideas were released: "There were several attempts to make a computer game, some made it to market, some didn't. We tried to create a virtual reality experience with Sony on PlayStation VR, It didn't work, and we had a mobile game that held."

(Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements, released for Android and iOS).

Gillian continued: "Our writing team put a lot of effort into writing three or four stories for different games, including the virtual reality game. Many hours of work went into the process. Creating a computer game is very difficult. But from the little I learned, it takes years and millions of dollars to be invested in the process. Especially If you try to explore new ground with virtual reality. It never came to light. And it's a shame."

The host of the podcast showed knowledge of the gaming industry and complemented Gillian: "Sometimes even if the brand is known, and the names behind it, it can still turn out not well if the context behind it is not good. You can't just rely on the name of the brand."

The creator responded to this statement: "Everything is true. If we make a game it must be great. The devil is in the small details, and execution is everything. We don't have what it takes to make it successful, so don't expect a game."

It seems that Gillian and Gold quickly realized how complex and expensive the game development process is considered to be in the industry.

Even if we got a game based on the series, nothing would guarantee us that the final product would meet the standards.

It takes quite a bit of talent and understanding to create a coherent and complete experience of a computer game, and the adjustment between the medium of television and the world of gaming is definitely a fragile texture, and can be very complicated to do.

Not every GTA style open world game or virtual reality experience is considered successful.

If we look at another drama series that got its own game is The Sopranos, with the 2005 title Road to Respect released for PlayStation 2, which featured the cast of James Gandolfini, Steven Van Zandt, Tony Sirico and the rest of the cast.

David Chase (writer of the series) was not involved in the project and it received poor reviews.

The computer game based on the 2008 Lost series developed by Ubisoft was created with the participation of writers Carrollton Cuse and Damon Lindolph, and received average reviews at best.

So as Gillian said: game development is a long, expensive, and complicated process, and while it is not an impossible task - it definitely requires the talent and understanding in the field to create a good game.

The brand name is not everything.
