China has expressed its intention to take resolute and effective measures to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling on the United States to strictly abide by the "One China" principle and the three joint communiques between the two sides.
The Xinhua news agency quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin as saying at a press conference in response to the visit of US lawmakers led by Senator Ed Markey to Taiwan that "US Senator Markey and his accompanying delegation insisted on visiting the Chinese region of Taiwan in ignoring the Chinese protests and its firm opposition to that." "This is a flagrant violation of the one-China principle and the three joint communiques between China and the United States, as well as violates China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and sends a seriously wrong signal to the separatist forces calling for the so-called independence of Taiwan."
"The one-China principle is a consensus in the international community and a basic rule governing international relations, as it is the political basis for establishing diplomatic relations between China and the United States and for developing bilateral relations," Wang added, stressing that "China's reunification is an unstoppable historical trend and the common will of the Chinese people."
Wang called on the United States to handle Taiwan-related issues wisely and correctly and stop manipulating, emptying and distorting the one-China principle in order to avoid this, stressing that linking with the separatists in Taiwan and trying to challenge the one-China principle is a miscalculation and will lead to such a small number of American politicians not reaching Anywhere".
Twelve days after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, which angered and resented China, a US parliamentary delegation arrived in Taipei yesterday for a two-day visit.
