Stralsund – The parliamentary group leader of the left, Dietmar Bartsch, is in the hospital after an accident.

Bartsch fell off his bike and broke six ribs, his spokesman Michael Schlick announced on Monday (August 15).

After Friedrich Merz, the left-wing politician is the second member of the Bundestag to be seriously injured within a short period of time.

The bicycle accident happened at the end of last week.

Dietmar Bartsch was on vacation and is now in the hospital in his birthplace Stralsund.

A spokesman for the left parliamentary group said that the group leader is already on the mend.

He is currently working from his bedside and hopes to leave the clinic soon.

Bartsch is one of the most important members of the left.

The 64-year-old has been at the head of the party faction in the Bundestag since 2015, initially alongside Sahra Wagenknecht and now together with Amira Mohamed Ali.

He also ran in the last two federal elections as a co-lead candidate for the left.

Most recently, he caused a stir when he sharply criticized the gas levy planned by the federal government.
