The French authorities have announced that they have brought under control a fire that has been going on since August 9 in the Gironde region, in the southwest of the country.
"The fire has been brought under control, but it has not been completely extinguished yet," Gironde fire official Mark Vermeulen told the Associated Press, noting that "authorities have opened roads in the area, but it is still forbidden to go into the woods."
The fire lost its effect due to the rain that fell on the area, after it covered an area of 74 square kilometers, and the authorities called on thousands of people to return to their homes, which they were forced to evacuate a few days ago as a result of the fire.
Most parts of Europe are experiencing a severe heat wave, with temperatures reaching about 45 degrees Celsius in some areas, and forest fires have spread to several countries, including Portugal, Spain, France and Germany.
