Nothing to hide: at his Holzkirchner constituency office, Karl Bär has made a striking list of the grants he receives from the state treasury and how he uses them.

The "expense allowance" is over 10,000 euros per month, plus a flat-rate expense allowance, employee budget and material cost allowance: Karl Bär, a Green Party politician in Berlin, discloses his income.

Holzkirchen

– There has been more money since July.

310.40 euros, to be exact.

The monthly "expense allowance" of a member of the Bundestag rose to 10,323.29 euros gross per month.

"I get that personally for my work," says Karl Bär.

The amount of these allowances is no secret, but the 37-year-old, who moved into the Bundestag for the first time in autumn 2021, had promised during the election campaign to publish all income, benefits and expenses transparently.

The Greens complied with this commitment at a press conference on Tuesday (2 August) in their constituency office in Holzkirch.

It became clear that it was not just the 10,000 euros in diets that made an impact.

For members of the Bundestag (Member of the Bundestag), the state treasury opens further special pots, some of which are lavishly filled.

Politician publishes his earnings: "Hope that pressure on colleagues will increase"

"It's a complex subject," Bär admits.

His constituency employee Maximilian Haberzettl fumbled through a number of lists - and sometimes had trouble assigning individual items such as coffee machines to the respective grant pots.

But now the lists are hanging at the constituency office and can be read in detail on Bär's website.

"I don't have to do it, but I want to," says Holzkirchner.

The aim is to keep the space for corruption and conspiracy theories small as a "transparent" member of parliament.

"And I hope that the pressure on colleagues to do the same will increase."

By the way: Everything from the region is also available in our regular Holzkirchen newsletter.

No fewer than four funding pots feed the work of the deputies, above all the monthly "compensations" mentioned, which increase annually according to the nominal wage index.

There is no Christmas or vacation pay, income tax has to be paid.

About 500 euros per month are due for health and long-term care insurance, and the federal government contributes the same amount.

Bär does not pay pension contributions, but can count on a pension (from age 67) of around 1000 euros per legislative period.

"I would prefer MPs to pay into the pension fund," says Bär.

The Holzkirchner will be provided with a Deutsche Bahn network card (1st class) free of charge.

Equivalent value: 7010 euros.

How much does a politician in the Bundestag earn?

Bär can spend up to 23,205 euros a month on employees

The employee flat rate forms pot two.

For up to 23,205 euros per month, every MdB can hire employees.

Billing is done via the Bundestag administration.

"Nine people work for me, two of them full-time," says Bär.

Pot three are again direct donations, the "tax-free expense allowance" for the exercise of the mandate in the amount of 4583.39 euros.

Rent can be paid from this, in the case of Bärs around 750 euros for the flat share in Berlin or the purchase of a used electric car (Renault Zoe).

What MPs use the lump sum for is not checked.

Bär has monthly fixed costs of 3000 euros, the remaining 1500 euros are freely available.

"My aim is to use the money for political work and not to go on vacation or buy shares with it," emphasizes Holzkirchner.

Pot four remains, the “Account for Benefits in Kind” (KoSa).

MdB can draw up to 12,000 euros per year from the KoSa pot – in addition to the lump sum (Pot 3).

Bär's office has to pay in advance, but can submit receipts and have the costs for office supplies, IT equipment and mobile phones reimbursed.

"I feel I'm paid fairly," says Bär, who emphasizes that he has "no additional income".

The mandate requires him to work more than 40 hours a week, there are usually many evening appointments and free weekends are rare.

After all, vacation is announced at the end of the week.

Bär takes three of the six weeks an MP is entitled to.

It goes to the Tyrolean mountains.
