Millions of baby seats recalled due to deadly risk of strangulation


The straps hang under the seat when not in use and crawling children can get tangled up. One child was killed and another was injured. These are the affected models.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall in the United States and Canada of more than two million baby seats from the company 4moms of the MamaRoo model, and 230,000 rocking chairs of the RockaRoo model, as announced This Monday in a statement the federal authorities and the company (whose official name is Thorley Industries).

The federal agency warned that when the seats are not in use, their baby restraint straps dangle below the seat and free-crawling children can become entangled in them, putting themselves at risk of strangulation.

The company received two reports of babies getting caught in the straps of the MamaRoo chair.

One of them, aged 10 months,

died of suffocation,

and another baby of the same age suffered neck injuries before being rescued by a caregiver.

No incident related to the RockaRoo chair was reported.

The recall includes only the MamaRoo models that use a three-point harness: Versions 1.0 and 2.0 (model number 4M-005), Version 3.0 (model number 1026), and Version 4.0 (model number 1037).

The MamaRoo model that uses a 5-point harness is not included in this recall.

The model number is located on the bottom of the unit.

RockaRoo is a front-to-back gliding baby seat.

The base has an analog stick and a power button to control the range of motion.

Model number 4M-012 is on the bottom of the unit. 

The infant seats were sold at BuyBuy Baby and Target stores nationwide and online at and Amazon from January 2010 through August 2022 for between $160 and $250.

Consumers who own one of these products should contact 4moms immediately to register for a free strap clip that will keep the straps from dangling below the swing when not in use.

This is the second time this summer that baby seats have been recalled.

In June, two models of Fisher-Price brand baby rockers were recalled because 13 babies died while sleeping in them between 2009 and 2021.
