Protective gloves: how to choose and maintain them?

2022-08-15T05:10:37.334Z

Hands are very exposed during DIY and gardening work. Wearing protective gloves should become a reflex.

In order to guard against the risks of gardening, it is advisable to wear gloves.

Their choice sometimes requires a good knowledge of it.

This is why we have identified the main criteria to be evaluated.

To discover

  • Garden: watch out for ticks!

Gloves to protect against mechanical risks

To saw, cut with a cutter, prune your roses, you need gloves resistant to cuts and perforations.

Mechanical risks are the subject of the EN 388 standard. In order to know the level of protection of a pair of gloves, look at the 4 figures appearing under the symbol of the hammer in a shield (often on the back of the product).

The 1st notes the risk of abrasion, the 2nd that of cutting, the 3rd that of tearing, the 4th that of perforation, from 1 (low protection) to 4 (maximum).

If one of the numbers is replaced by an X, this means that the risk has not been tested, except for that of cutting.

Since 2016, a new standard has imposed an additional test for highly cut-resistant gloves.

The 2nd digit then becomes an X and a letter arrives in the 5th position.

All this information is included in the notice slipped into each pair.

For a simplified reading, the manufacturers display their own pictograms.

Gloves against chemical and thermal risks

Heat protection gloves for welding work are easily recognizable.

The label features the shield pictogram with a flame inside (EN 407 standard).

If you tinker outside in winter, get models suitable for the cold (EN 511 standard) displaying a snowflake.

The gloves to be used against chemical risks are identifiable by a pictogram representing a laboratory flask.

You will find them in the garden section, next to the phytosanitary products.

They are waterproof and include a cuff to also protect the forearm.

Beware of allergies

Check if the glove contains latex, used in coating, because of the risk of allergy.

If you are sensitive to it, refer to nitrile (synthetic rubber)

Flexibility and size: choosing the right protective gloves

Models that fit well in the hands are useful for gardening and DIY jobs that require precision.

But

“the more the glove offers dexterity, the thinner it is and the less resistance it presents, in particular to the risk of abrasion, explains Marine Elek, communication and web sales manager for the manufacturer Rostaing.

We propose a compromise: gloves which are characterized by a fine knitted base on which we place reinforcements of more resistant materials, such as split leather, in the very exposed areas of the hand.

Some models even allow you to answer the phone.

Gloves should be snug to be comfortable and not slip.

“Measure the width of your palm, from the base of the index finger to the base of the little finger.

The result, in centimeters, will give you your height.

Then you have to try on the gloves on the shelves, like shoes

,” advises Marine Elek.

The Rostaing brand offers models for children and small sizes, which are sometimes difficult to find.

How to maintain the protective gloves?

Don't take your gloves off when they're dirty.

“Keep them and wash them like you wash your hands: put them under water, put soap, rub, rinse.

Take them out and let them air dry, away from a heat source.

Once dry, store them in a dry place.

If they are leather gloves that have been used in the garden, remove the soil then apply moisturizer or shoe polish to keep them flexible

,” advises Marine Elek.
