Eisenkot, 62, was born in Tiberias to parents who immigrated from Morocco, the second of four siblings.
He enlisted in the Golani Brigade in 1978. He went through the chain of command of the brown beret wearers, was assigned to the 51st Battalion and in the 1980s was appointed deputy commander of the rifle company in the battalion.
After that, he was appointed commander of the 13th battalion and in 1997 took over the command of the entire brigade.
Later, he was chosen by Prime Minister Ehud Barak as his military secretary.
After Barak lost the elections, Eisenkot continued in office for another six months under Eric Sharon as prime minister.
Then Eisenkot was appointed commander of the 366th Reserve Division and finally received command of the Judea and Samaria Division.
In 2005 he was appointed head of the Operations Division and after the Second Lebanon Wars he became the commander of the Northern Command.
Before his appointment as Chief of Staff, he was Benny Gantz's deputy for two years. Now they are collaborating again.
