The United Nations Population Fund called on Monday to "
not forget Afghan women and girls
" despite the other crises affecting the world, a year after the return to power of the Taliban.

As the world faces multiple and overlapping crises, we must not forget Afghan women and girls.
When women and girls are deprived of their basic rights, we are all affected
," said Natalia Kanem, the Fund's executive director, on Monday, denouncing the "
continuous erosion
" of women's rights, from education to access to health.
“
One year after the Taliban took power, the country is dying in a deep economic and humanitarian crisis.
Soaring food and energy prices - exacerbated by drought and war in Ukraine - have led to approximately 95% of the population, and nearly all households headed by a female wife, do not have enough to eat
," she added in a statement.
In a separate statement published this weekend, the director of the UN agency UN Women, Sima Bahous, denounced the "
meticulous construction of policies of inequality
" by the Taliban.
“
We must continue to raise the voices of Afghan women and girls who fight every day for their right to live free and equal
,” she added.
“
Their fight is our fight.
What happens to Afghan women and girls is the responsibility of the world.
