Natan Fitoussi, an Israeli army soldier, died in the northern occupied West Bank following "friendly fire".
The 20-year-old arrived from France in Israel in 2014 with his family, said an official from the town hall of the Israeli city of Netanya (west) where he resided.
On Monday evening, he was killed by Israeli army fire near the town of Tulkarem, the army said in a statement, without detailing the circumstances of the incident.
She had first reported Monday evening of a shooting near Tulkarem, before retracting and indicating to review the incident, without elaborating.
Sergeant Natan Fitoussi was posthumously promoted to staff sergeant, the army said, adding that it had opened an investigation into the incident.
On Twitter, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid praised the memory of the soldier, saying he was "heartbroken", and sent his condolences to his family.
