Activists demand the release of an indigenous woman accused of killing her husband before he murdered her

Feminist groups and relatives of Maricela López Bautista demonstrated in front of the Palace of Justice of Los Altos in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, to demand the freedom of the young woman, who is in prison accused of having killed her husband, who tried to assassinate her together with their children.

Maricela, 28, killed her partner on November 22, 2019, after he locked her up and beat her, along with her two minor children, to kill them with a machete.

The young indigenous woman defended herself with a log, causing the death of the aggressor.

The activists recalled that López Bautista had already denounced gender violence, but his case was ignored by the authorities.

The groups seek to appeal the sentence of Maricela, who has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
