The actress, who is seeking a seat in the Senate in the elections on September 25, says she is tired of politicians who only argue and get nowhere, and explains that Ghandi is her inspiration

Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida, 95, has decided to try her luck in politics again and will stand as a candidate for the Senate in the next general elections to be held in the transalpine country on September 25.

The diva has assured that she has embarked on this electoral adventure because she is tired of seeing how "politicians argue with each other without ever getting anywhere."

“As long as I have energy, I use it for important things, especially for my country,” she explained.

The movie star, who has announced his candidacy just a month after his ninety-fifth birthday, will compete with a new electoral list, called Sovereign and Popular Italy, which brings together several small formations such as the Communist Party, Civil Action or Socialist Homeland.

His ideology is, among others, anti-system, communist and eurosceptic.

The leaders of the political experiment are Marco Rizzo, secretary of the Communist Party, and Antonio Ingroia, a controversial former Italian judge, who is also Lollobrigida's personal lawyer.

He assists her in the judicial war that the internationally successful actress has opened with her only son, Milko Skofic, and her grandson, Dimitri, for managing her fortune.

Both accuse the personal secretary of the diva, Andrea Piazzolla, 34,

of squandering his assets taking advantage of his advanced age and psychological state.

In addition, relatives have been trying for years to disqualify the movie star for giving a large part of his properties to his assistant.

The young man, as requested by the artist's relatives and the Rome prosecutor's office, is being tried for wasting the diva's assets.

In all these years of battles in the courts, Lollobridiga has always defended herself by claiming that she is "completely lucid" to know what to do with her assets.

In the midst of the crossing of accusations, a judge ordered a couple of years ago that the actress's estate be managed by a special administrator until the dispute was resolved.

Currently, the lawyer Ingroia is trying to give the actress back the reins of the full management of her huge fortune.

Although, for now, justice has not agreed with her and has dismissed her appeals.

He has been precisely the one who has proposed to the multi-award-winning actress to participate in this political adventure.

He claims it's proof of her mental clarity.

"This candidacy should not seem anomalous because Lollobrigida is, regardless of some judicial measures that we have already challenged, perfectly lucid," Ingroia told the media.

And she added: “In her lucidity, she has always been an ambassador of Italy in the world, of peace.

And since we, as People's Sovereign Italy, have our own political program aimed at reaffirming national sovereignty, we believe that she can well represent this image of an Italy that wants to be above the rest again, sovereign and not subjugated.

There are issues of which she is a direct witness, such as justice, or the situation of the elderly”.

She has explained that she has decided to take this political step because she is "tired of hearing politicians argue with each other without ever getting anywhere".

And she has promised that if she is elected she will fight "so that the people decide, from health to justice."

"Italy is bad, I want to do something good and positive," she launched.

She has also pointed out that her inspiration is the considered founding father of India, Mahatma Gandhi, “for his way of doing things”, and for his doctrine of non-violence.

And she has revealed her closeness to Indira Gandhi, the Indian prime minister who was assassinated in 1984, the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first head of government of independent India.

She “I saw her every time she came to Rome.

She was an extraordinary woman,” she has said.

Bearing in mind that the formation for which Lollobrigida is running is new, that it brings together small parties that if they do not obtain 3% of the votes they will not be able to enter Parliament and in view of the electoral law currently in force, there is little chance that it will be elected senator.

Her candidacy seems, rather, a coup to publicize the new party.

Lollobrigida's career has not only been reduced to the small and big screen, but has also been dedicated to photography and sculpture.

Also, for the versatile diva, this is not her first political adventure.

After retiring from the world of cinema in 1997, Gina Lollobrigida decided to change her mind and stand in the European elections in 1999 with Romano Prodi's democrats.

Despite her fame and being a living myth of European cinema, the actress did not get enough votes – she was left with around 10,000 – to represent Italy in the European Parliament.

She had to settle for being named a Goodwill Ambassador by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, better known by the acronym FAO.

“It was an experience, in life you can lose and you can win”,

Her lawyer has explained that the actress, due to her age, although she is well, will not personally participate in the electoral campaign rallies, but will limit herself to sending statements and video messages.
