There hasn't been any significant rainfall in the region for weeks - everything is bone dry.

A district town has therefore asked the population to save water.

Weilheim

– Am I consuming too much water?

That's a question that many people ask themselves these days.

But how much is too much?

Katharina Segerer from the city administration has a very simple tip for this: “Look at your water bill.

With a consumption of 70 to 100 liters per person and day, you are one of the frugal consumers.” However, anyone who chases more than 130 liters through the line every day can easily look for potential savings.

The basic rule applies: "Only four percent of precious drinking water is used for cooking or drinking," Segerer continues.

Most of the water consumed every day flows through taps and washing machines or flushes the toilet.

So if you want to save water (and money by the way), you should start there.

Water is becoming scarce in Bavaria - "Aerator makes water fuller"

For example, by using a flow limiter.

This is an adapter in the shower hose or on the tap and ensures that less water flows.

"In combination with so-called aerators, also known as aerators, you replace water with air and in this way make it fuller," writes Segerer.

Buckets of drinking water are also flushed through the toilet every day.

Here, too, you don't have to spend huge sums of money to use noticeably less water.

If it cannot be a water-saving cistern right away, then according to the city of Weilheim, upgrading the old cistern with a water stop button is sufficient.

These are available for 5 to 15 euros.

Only switch on the washing machine when it is really full

It's easy to save 100 liters of water if you just take a shower instead of taking a full bath. But the city goes even further: "Showering every other day is perfectly sufficient." A lot of water is also wasted when doing laundry.

Therefore, the city advises: "Only start full machines, do without a pre-wash and pay attention to low consumption values when buying a new one."

In addition, rainwater and so-called gray water should be better used: Gray water is the part of domestic waste water that is produced by bathing, showering or washing.

"Cleaned by special gray water systems, it is suitable, for example, for flushing toilets, washing machines or watering the garden," writes Katharina Segerer.

Water from rainwater cisterns can also be used for this purpose.

However, gray water extraction systems require space, a storage system and their own pipe network.

Watering should only be done in the morning or evening to reduce evaporation.

If you set up a rain barrel, you also have free irrigation water at hand.
