Drought forces China to cut power to industry

2022-08-16T17:04:59.809Z

In Sichuan, there is a lack of water in the dams. The authorities force factories and offices to close.

If the low water level in the dams in France is of concern to EDF, China has fallen into a crisis situation.

The drought, which has been raging since July, is of such intensity in certain regions that the authorities have decided to ration electricity.

This is the case in Sichuan, a key industrial center of the country, with a population of some 84 million, located at the foot of the Himalayan plateau.

Drought and temperatures set records there.

The thermometer has regularly crossed 40 ° C in the region in recent days and Tuesday evening, it was still 39 ° C in the capital, Chengdu.

According to provincial authorities, the flow of water from hydroelectric dams is reduced by 50% compared to historical averages.

In the neighboring province of Hubei, the flow of the Yang Tse Kiang, at the exit of the pharaonic Three Gorges dam, the largest in the world, has decreased by 40% compared to last year, reports the Bloomberg agency.
