Technical assistance of any kind is urgently needed in Ukraine.

In and around Eichenau's twin town of Wischgorod, everything that serves the protection and safety of the local population is welcome.

Eichenau – Last Saturday, a special kind of aid convoy set out: three fire brigade vehicles and an ambulance.

The recipients are the city of Vishgorod, but also the district.

This corresponds to a district in this country.

The starting point for the action was the loss of a fire engine from the fire department of Novi Petrivtsi, a suburb of Vischgorod.

This had lost a fire engine in May because it had hit a Russian mine.

From next week there will be two tank firefighting vehicles (TLF) in the north of Ukraine.

They are equipped with a pump and a fire-fighting water tank, which enables initial firefighting without an external water supply.

A portable pump vehicle with water (TSF-W), which is suitable for smaller operations, will also make the journey.

Also an ambulance sponsored by the Malteser relief service.

"But there will be six vehicles that will initially drive to the Polish-Ukrainian border," explains Sepp Spiess, the deputy mayor of Eichenau and fire department officer for 30 years.

Together with the third mayor, Rike Schiele, and partnership officer, Claus Guttenthaler, he finally secured the transport of the vehicles and sent them on their way.

In addition to the emergency vehicles, there is a vehicle with Ukrainian personnel and one that brings the German drivers back.

The route from Eichenau to the Polish border is almost 1200 kilometers long.

The aid was made possible by an application for funding within the framework of the small project fund of the “Service Agency for Municipalities in One World” (SKEW).

This enables municipalities to get started with new measures and partnerships in municipal development policy.

So 45,000 euros came from grants, and a further 45,000 euros brought donations to the Vishgorod Circle of Friends.

The four vehicles were housed on the property of Spiess's mother-in-law.

When asked why there are so many fire engines on the site, Spiess had always wittily commented in recent weeks: "We are trying out a second location for a fire station." (Hans Kürzl)
