(CNN Spanish) --

The movie "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" makes its debut on the big screen and shows us some new androids, which apparently are members of the old known Red Patrol.

Both the story and the script and character design were in charge of Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball universe, which adds a special touch to this movie.

  • From "Detective Pikachu" to the Oscars: she is Ivel Hernández, the Mexican who worked on the visual effects of the multi-winning "Dune"

However, there is one detail that will probably lower the enthusiasm a bit: the tape will not be part of the "canon" history of Dragon Ball, at least not for some fans and specialists in the world of anime and manga, such as Yanina de los Milagros Torti Frugone, who completed a master's degree in Cultural Industries, Politics and Management at the National University of Quilmes, with a thesis on digital consumption related to anime, manga and cosplay.

“(The new film) does not respond to anything canon.

It is simply a Dragon Ball card game that is going to be released in Japan and 'Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero' is basically the animation of that, that is, it is a great propaganda that perhaps has a story, but it is a great excuse to promote the game.

This does not mean that it is not valid or that it is liked or that the fans like it, because clearly one loves the universe to which one has been committed for many years”, comments Torti Frugone in an interview with CNN En Español.

But what does this canon refer to?

Simply put, it refers to the fictional story that is validated by its original author.

"The canon is what the author supposedly considers valid in his story that he himself executed in some way, created, devised, lived, drew or was in the supervision of the narration," explained the specialist.

Therefore, we can say that in Dragon Ball there are productions that are part of the canon and others that are not, the first being what will make you understand the original story and the second what is not essential for the main plot (although sometimes equally appreciated by fans).

It is a complicated route to navigate if you are just starting your adventure in Dragon Ball.

The path of each follower is different.

But do not worry.

To guide you, Torti Frugone told us about one of the options you can follow to understand the original story of Dragon Ball.

It is not the only option there is and it may differ from others, as the academic acknowledges;

however, it can save you a lot of time.

We tell you below.

Dragon Ball movies and series to understand the canon story, according to teacher Torti Frugone

The teacher in Cultural Industries adds that Akira Toriyama is an author who came up with things along the way, so there may be a gap in the time of publication and the chronological time of the original story.

Taking this into account, this would be the order for Torti Frugone:

  • The special manga "Dragon Ball Minus" (published in April, 2014), which is an additional chapter of the manga "Jaco, the galactic patrolman" and tells us the story of how Goku is sent to Earth from the planet Vegeta (his place originally).

  • The classic “Dragon Ball” series (broadcast between 1986-1989)

  • It is followed by the "Dragon Ball Z" series, the Saiyajin saga (1989-1990)

  • "Dragon Ball Z", the Frieza saga (1990-1991)

  • The short film or special "Dragon Ball Z: The two warriors of the future, Gohan and Trunks" (1993)

  • "Dragon Ball Z", the Android saga (1991-1992)

  • "Dragon Ball Z", the saga of Cell (1992)

  • "Dragon Ball Z", the saga of the Cell Games (1992-1993)

  • "Dragon Ball Z", the saga of Majin Buu (1993-1995)

  • “Dragon Ball Super”, which is the most recent series (2015-2018)

  • The movie “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” (2018), connecting with “Dragon Ball Minus”

  • After this film, follows the manga "Dragon Ball Super" and its saga "The Prisoner of the Galactic Patrol" (2018-2020)

  • The manga "Dragon Ball Super" and its saga "Granolah El Surviviente" (2020 to present)

  • Finally, there is something that remains pending.

The last 4 chapters of "Dragon Ball Z" (from 288 to 291, broadcast in 1996) -where Uub makes his appearance, who is the reincarnation of Kid Buu- take place in the distant future, after what we know so far of " Dragon Ball Super” (both on television and in the manga), so fans are still waiting for that long-awaited connection, explained Torti Frugone.

These 4 episodes are also known as the Pacific World saga of “Dragon Ball Z”.

Longer order, according to IMDb

As mentioned, the order of the specialist would be the "short" way to understand the canon story of Dragon Ball.

However, the IMDb page offers us another option, which is much longer and includes more TV movies or specials.

How would that order go?

Here we present it to you:

-The classic “Dragon Ball” series (broadcast between 1986-1989)

-The short film or special "Dragon Ball Z: Give me back my Gohan" (1989)

-It is followed by the "Dragon Ball Z" series, the Saiyajin saga (1989-1990, from chapter 1 to 35)

-The short film "Dragon Ball Z: The strongest man in this world" (1990)

-The short movie "Dragon Ball Z: The World's Greatest Battle is About to Begin" (1990)

-The short movie "Dragon Ball Z: Goku is a Super Saiyan" (1991)

-“Dragon Ball Z”, the Frieza saga (1990-1991, from chapter 36 to 107)

-The short film "Dragon Ball Z: Frieza's battle against Goku's father" (1990).

Although the story takes place before the classic "Dragon Ball" series, characters from the Frieza saga are mentioned, so this movie should be seen after the said saga, according to IMDb.

-The short “Dragon Ball: The Bardock episode” (2011).

It is a prequel to the previous film, says IMDb.

-“Dragon Ball Z”, the saga of Garlick Jr. (1991, from chapter 108 to 117)

-The television movie or special "Dragon Ball Z: The Two Warriors of the Future: Gohan and Trunks" (1993)

-“Dragon Ball Z”, the saga of the Androids (1991-1992, from chapter 118 to 139)

-The short movie "Dragon Ball Z: The Mightiest Rivals" (1991)

-The short movie "Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler" (1992)

-The short film "Dragon Ball Z: The fight of the three Saiyans" (1992)

-The short film or special "Dragon Ball Z: The two warriors of the future, Gohan and Trunks" (1993)

-“Dragon Ball Z”, the Cell saga (1992, from chapter 140 to 165)

-The short movie "Dragon Ball Z: The Invincible Power" (1993)

-The short film "Dragon Ball Z: The plan to eradicate the Super Saiyans" (1993)

-“Dragon Ball Z”, the saga of the Cell Games (1992-1993, from chapter 166 to 194)

-The short movie "Dragon Ball Z: The Galaxy is in Peril" (1993)

-The short movie “Dragon Ball Z: Return of the Legendary Warrior” (1993)

-The short film "Dragon Ball Z: The Final Battle" (1994)

-“Dragon Ball Z”, the saga of Majin Buu (1993-1995, from chapter 195 to 287)

-The short film "Dragon Ball Z: The fusion of Goku and Vegeta" (1995)

-The short movie "Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Dragon" (1995)

-“Dragon Ball Super”, which is the most recent series (2015-2018)

-The movie “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” (2018)

-“Dragon Ball Z”, the saga of the Pacific World (1996, from chapter 288 to 291)
