If you want your home to be greener, you don't necessarily have to buy houseplants.

In most cases, propagation is easy and cheap.

Extensively greening your own four walls is easy and doesn't have to cost a lot of money.

Many houseplants are easy to reproduce - either from your own stock or from friends and family.

Depending on the type of plant, different methods are suitable for propagation through Kindel offshoots or cuttings.

Those are the best tips.

Taking cuttings from houseplants works especially well with different types of ficus or poinsettias.

The spot where one or more leaves grow is called the shoot node.

This is where the knife comes in.

It is best to use a sharp, disinfected knife so as not to damage the mother plant.

The cutting should be about four inches long and have at least two leaves.

Then you put the cutting in a glass of water and make sure that only the leafless part is in the water.

A bright, wind-protected place at normal room temperature is suitable as a location.

The water should be changed twice a week, new roots should form after two to three weeks.

Then plant and water carefully.

In winter, make sure that the offshoot does not get cold from below.

For example, if the cutting is on the windowsill, use a saucer to be on the safe side.

The cuttings can also be planted directly in moist soil.

The soil should be low in nutrients so that the possibly strong fertilizer does not damage the young roots.

Location should be a bright, warm spot - but not in direct sun.

To keep the humidity high, put a plastic bag over the plant.

As soon as she forms new shoots, the bag can be removed.

When the cutting has grown strong enough, it is repotted - preferably in a substrate suitable for the plant.

Water Kindel cuttings carefully

There are usually offshoots, also called children, on the main shoot of the mother plant.

They usually have their own roots, for example the spider plant forms such independent plants.

To remove them, use a sharp, sanitized knife to get as close to the main stem as possible without damaging it.

Then the child can go directly into a pot with potting soil.

Be careful when watering, because too much water can rot the roots.

Also offshoots like a warm room temperature and do not like to be in direct sunlight.

It is best to rear offshoots in spring, because most plants are already in the growth phase at this time of year.

A good opportunity to make offshoots or cuttings is basically when repotting, as the plant is then often divided or trimmed.

Especially kitchen herbs such as basil can be easily propagated by division.
