Peacock escapes during children's birthday party: Now "Hildegard" lives on the roof

The peacock »Hildegard« has been living on the roofs of the Karben district of Petterweil in the Wetteraukreis for two months.

She feels at home.

Karben - About two months ago, the residents of Vilbeler Straße in Petterweil suddenly received animal visitors.

A colorful bird alighted at the southern end of town.

To be more precise, it is a peahen that goes by the name »Hildegard«.

"At night she sleeps on the roofs, during the day she often dares to be near people," says resident Chantal-Isabell Busch, as reported by fnp.de. "The children on the street are crazy about the animal.

Although Hildegard is incredibly nice, she always keeps a certain distance.«

Some time ago, the fire brigades from Petterweil and Okarben came with several emergency vehicles to capture the peacock.

A vet tried it from the fire brigade turntable ladder with tranquilizer darts, but missed five times.

Ultimately, the whole dig was in vain, says Busch.

Peacock "Hildegard" in Karben: escaped during a children's birthday party

Farmer Albrecht Gauterin has been identified as the owner of the peacock.

There is a peacock enclosure in his yard.

"During a turbulent children's birthday party, the enclosure was accidentally opened so that all the animals could escape," reports Gauterin.

“We managed to recapture four peacocks.

The fifth, however, made it to Petterweil.« Those unfamiliar with the area should know that the farm with the adjoining football golf course is quite a distance from the outskirts of Petterweiler.

Owners and residents are now somewhat at a loss about the situation.

Carcasses of mice and smaller birds are often found in the gardens on Vilbeler Straße.

Chantal-Isabell Busch also talks about faeces and scratched garden furniture.

A solution must urgently be found for these intolerable conditions.

She warns: "The bird must be put back into a species-appropriate attitude, no matter how difficult it is to capture it."

A renewed attempt seems indeed to be the means of choice.

Albrecht Gauterin would also be most likely to support such an approach.

It was always hoped that the animal would eventually come back on its own.

But the residents fed it and thus got used to a new environment.

"A veterinarian told me personally that the peacock should now be considered feral," adds Gauterin.

Busch counters the accusation of feeding.

From the beginning, the animal was only supplied with water.

It remains to be hoped that, despite such controversies, a solution can be found in the interests of animal welfare.

"Maybe there will be a place somewhere in a wildlife park," hopes the resident.
