Kindergarten, crèche, after-school care, 211 places and 35 employees: the Schaftlach daycare center offers what families need.

However, it is currently lacking in staff.

Schaftlach – In a letter to the municipal council, daycare manager Magdalena Köstler Köstler makes it clear how difficult the situation is.

He should back up their request to hire someone to take care of administrative matters, at least ten hours a week.

As a relief so that Köstler has her back free for what is really important to her: quality work with the children.

Köstler writes that she currently needs 90 percent of her working hours to do all the administrative work.

Only ten percent remained for the educational management: "It should be the other way around."

At its meeting, the Waakirchner municipal council unanimously approved the request to hire an administrative staff member.

When it comes to financing, the municipality can even count on state subsidies of up to 50,000 euros per year.

But the content of the letter, which the head of the building authority Christoph Marcher read out at the meeting, affected the committee.

It reflects the pressure Köstler and her team are under.

Two colleagues have taken parental leave, two others are reorienting themselves professionally.

The positions have been advertised since June, without the hoped-for response.

An applicant would start immediately if she could only get an apartment in the area, writes Köstler.

She very much hopes that someone else will get in touch in August.

"But we have to admit that the shortage of skilled workers has also arrived in Schaftlach."

For the sake of the children, the parents and the employees, Köstler plans to go more into the groups himself.

Nevertheless, it could be that the children's hours are reduced or even contracts have to be terminated, Köstler makes clear: "We have to make sure that a normal workload does not overburden the employees and that the children's well-being has priority." The dichotomy, the children fair and to do the administrative work at the same time puts a lot of strain on her and her team.

Mayor Norbert Kerkel (FWG) said that the fact that skilled workers are hard to come by in this area is “not an isolated phenomenon”, but rather ubiquitous.

But he thinks it is very important to give the head of the kindergarten room to do her work: “We have an incredibly good line with Magdalena.

We're not allowed to burn them."

Evi Obermüller (Greens), mother and teacher, emphatically supported the demand for an administrative specialist.

Köstler's reasoning is absolutely understandable: "It's much more important that Lena can do her pedagogical tasks again, she's incredibly good at that." Unfortunately, the pedagogical work is becoming less important than the administrative stories, which is a shame.

The community must be careful not to scare away their kindergarten director.

Pedagogical specialists, according to Obermüller, can now choose their positions.

She wanted to get into the point that a teacher would come if a suitable apartment could be found.

The community is currently planning some housing projects, reminded Obermüller.

"We have to keep in mind that we are creating living space for our teachers." Unfortunately, their earnings are not lavish.

Kerkel nodded to that.

The community is currently looking for solutions to the housing problem in this area.

If none can be found, says Kerkel, in the case of the Schaftlacher kindergarten this could mean that the community would have to close a group: "That would be the worst case."
