Washington-Sana

Virginia Governor Jim Justice declared a state of emergency today in two southern counties affected by flooding caused by torrential rain.

"The floods destroyed more than 100 homes, as well as bridges and roads, as well as disrupting drinking water networks and cutting off electricity to thousands of homes," the Associated Press quoted Justice in a statement.

A Virginia Department of Highway official said several feet of mud had rendered roads impassable in Smithers along the Fayette-Knoha County Line.

The National Weather Service has forecast more thunderstorms this week in most parts of the state.

At least eight people were killed in the wake of heavy rains that caused massive floods last month in eastern Kentucky.
