The Centre for Health Protection said today (16th) that a 33-year-old man developed abdominal pain, diarrhea and nausea after eating wild mushrooms at home for about two hours last Saturday (13th) after picking wild mushrooms in Yujing Lane, Tai Po. He went to the Accident and Emergency Department of Prince of Wales Hospital on August 14 and was admitted to the hospital for further treatment. He is in stable condition and has been discharged.

This case is the third case of food poisoning caused by the consumption of wild mushrooms in the past five days. The authorities urge the public not to pick and eat wild mushrooms.


A 51-year-old woman picked wild mushrooms on the roadside of Shek Wu Hui, Sheung Shui. She was suspected of food poisoning after eating them.

The CHP pointed out that since it is difficult to distinguish whether mushrooms are suitable for consumption, the public is urged not to pick wild mushrooms for consumption.

Food poisoning caused by eating mushrooms is generally acute.

Symptoms usually include bowel symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain shortly after eating.

Depending on the species of mushrooms, patients may also experience profuse sweating, hallucinations, coma or other neurological symptoms and liver failure, which may even lead to death in severe cases.

The authorities also pointed out that if you suspect food poisoning caused by eating mushrooms, you should seek medical attention immediately.

If there are any remaining mushrooms, you should take them with you to seek medical advice for identification of the type.
