The Russian Space Agency revealed today (Monday) for the first time the physical model of what is planned to be a new Russian space station.

Moscow recently announced that it intends to leave the International Space Station (ISS) due to criticism of the war in Ukraine.

The construction of a new space station is part of Russia's desire to cut off its dependence on Western countries and move forward alone or in cooperation with countries such as Iran or China.

The West, which accuses Russia of an unjustified war, including in Ukraine, has imposed economic sanctions on Moscow aimed at harming technology, knowledge and funding.

Russia's national space station Roscosmos presented a model of the space station, named "ROSS", in the state media as part of an exhibition of the military industry "Army-2022".

Yuri Borisov, appointed by President Vladimir Putin last month to head the station, has said that Russia will leave the ISS after 2024, and that the country is developing its own space station.

The ISS was launched in 1998, and has been continuously manned since November 2000 as part of a Russian-American partnership that includes Canada, Japan and 11 European countries.

The American space agency NASA, which operates the station until 2030, has not yet given official permission for Russia to leave.

In a statement, Roscosmos said that the new space station will be launched in two stages, without providing dates. The space station will allow cosmonauts a much wider view to monitor development than the current situation, it said. .

Russian media reported that the first phase is planned for 2025-6 and no later than 2030.

The second and final phase will be launched in 2030-35.

There will be no continuous presence of people at the station.

Dmitry Rogozin, the former head of Roscosmos, known for his opposition to the West, said the station could be used for military purposes when necessary.
