Engineer Firas Zarouf, director of the Agricultural Cooperative Bank branch in Maharda, stated that the number of farmers who benefited from compensation for frost damage on the potato crop reached 215 in the villages and towns of Shir, Halfaya, Majdal, Mirzaf, Zarjis, Zallaqiyat and Mahrada.
In a statement to SANA reporter, Zarouf pointed out that the value of the disbursed amounts amounted to about 238 million pounds, according to the nominal tables received from the Fund for Mitigating the Effects of Drought and Natural Disasters on Agricultural Production in Hama.
He pointed out that the potato crop is one of the main crops on which the farmers of Maharda depend due to its relatively medium production cycle, good financial return and ease of marketing, pointing out that the potato crop was exposed to several frost waves during last March, which caused great damage to the potato fields in those areas.
For their part, a number of potato growers called for amending the mechanism for calculating damages to include all areas and quantities of affected production, in addition to increasing the value of the compensations disbursed, which would help farmers compensate part of their losses and continue their agricultural work in light of the high costs and requirements of agricultural production.
