The Chairman of the Palestinian Authority issued a clarification for the storm caused by his words last night at a press conference in Germany with Chancellor Schulz. In the message he published, Abu Mazen stated that "the Holocaust is the most terrible crime that happened in modern human history." He emphasized that there was no intention in his words to deny the uniqueness of the Holocaust that was carried out in the previous century and that this is something that deserves the strongest condemnation. Regarding the crimes that the chairman of the authority spoke of, it was clarified that "it is important to understand, the massacres that have taken place against the Palestinian people since the days of the Nakba by the Israeli forces - are crimes that have not stopped to this day."
Meanwhile, Abu Mazen's words caused a widespread uproar among politicians and journalists in Israel and around the world.
The Vice President of the European Commission, Mr. Margaritis Shakinas said: "The statement of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas is unacceptable. The Holocaust is a stain that will not be erased from European history. It erases Jewish life and heritage in many parts of our continent. Distortion of the Holocaust is dangerous, it feeds anti-Semitism and harms democracy".
