The discounter Netto is advertising its own brand on Facebook – and doing so properly against the confectionery manufacturer Mars.

Behind this is a tough price war.

Maxhütte-Haidhof – Germany's largest supermarket chain, Edeka, to which Netto also belongs, is now known for its tough price wars: For months there have been disputes between the Edeka association and well-known manufacturers who wanted to push through price increases.

There were even delivery stops and delistings.

Well-known brands such as Pepsi, Tempo or Milka and cosmetics from L'Oreal were also affected.

In the meantime, the situation there seems to have calmed down again.

Facebook post: Netto accuses Mars of “unreasonable price increases”.

But now there's a new dispute - this time with Mars, which produces popular candies like Snickers, Twix, Airwaves and M&M's.

The discounter Netto even attacks Mars directly in a Facebook post: “The manufacturer Mars is demanding an unreasonable price increase.

We at Netto are fighting for you and with our own brands we offer you an alternative that is at least 64 percent cheaper, but which tastes just as good 100 percent.” The picture shows a Netto copy of “Choco Nuts” next to a bag of M&M’s, with the words above: "Don't feel like moon prices from Mars?

Then go to Netto!”

Net: Facebook users complain about a lack of offers

As funny as the Facebook post may sound, the background to the dispute is serious - also for consumers: Manufacturers are faced with ever higher production costs due to the lack of raw materials and skyrocketing energy prices and want to pass these on to retailers.

But they don't just meet with understanding there: There are "general trends in price increases that are unavoidable.

These include rising raw material prices and transport costs,” explains Markus Mosa, CEO of Edeka Central Foundation & Co. KG, according to

Lebensmittelzeitung

.

But there is also "another, quite avoidable price driver: the market power of the global brand industry".

According to Mosa, the global consumer goods industry has increased profits in recent months, while consumers are groaning under the high prices.

That's why it's so important that the Edeka group "can increasingly negotiate on an equal footing with the leading brand manufacturers."

According to the food

newspaper Mosa

, retailers want to ensure more affordable consumer prices .

The comments under the Facebook post by Netto suggest that it's not that easy.

Several users complain that there are no offers in the Netto branches or that they find empty shelves.

"It would be nicer if the special offers from the brochure actually existed!

Four stores approached, not one of them even got the goods delivered.

I'm really served!” writes a woman under the post.
