The risk of forest fires in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen is currently very high.

Therefore, there are a few things to consider in the vicinity of forests.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen

– Due to the high temperatures, the risk of forest fires in the district is currently very high.

According to the nationwide forest fire statistics, in 2021 most fires were caused by negligence, primarily by forest visitors such as hikers and campers.

When it comes to “forest fire,” many people first think of a campfire that got out of control.

"It's the classic, so to speak," says Rudolf Plochmann, head of the Tölz forestry operation.

But there are a few other causes that can lead to a forest and/or meadow fire.

For example discarded cigarette butts.

"In the forest, making fire and smoking are prohibited by law," says Plochmann.

Because even a cigarette butt that appears to have come out can catch fire, says Plochmann.

Glass bottles and shards can also cause a fire.

"They act like a magnifying glass when there is enough sunlight."

Struck cigarette butts and hot catalytic converters can start a fire

Incidentally, cars can also start a forest fire.

Namely when you park with a hot catalytic converter on a forest path or on the edge of a meadow.

This does not apply to older vehicles, but also to new ones.

Cars and bicycles should therefore not be parked on dry grassy areas.

Due to the great danger, the government of Upper Bavaria has ordered aerial surveillance again.

Also from the airfield in Königsdorf is started.

The pilots fly in a loop towards Isarwinkel and Tegernsee, then south past Munich towards Murnau to observe the situation.

In addition to the pilot, there is a specially trained official air observer on board, and there is usually an employee of the civil protection authorities on site.

The flight takes place in the afternoon because that is when the risk of fire is greatest.

"Forests on light, sandy locations with little vegetation, sunny forest clearings and forest edges are particularly at risk," says Wolfgang Rupp, spokesman for the government of Upper Bavaria.

Farmers are also currently being asked not to burn any ground cover and not to singe off any plants or plant residues in areas.

And how does the game cope with the heat?

"It's not a problem for deer and red deer," says Plochmann.

The chamois, who prefer it cooler, would be more affected by the heat.

"The animals now lie down in the shade and sleep through the day."
