In Berlin, the federal elections in September 2021 were chaotic. A new vote in around 440 voting districts in the capital is becoming more and more likely after a draft resolution from a commission.

Those entitled to vote in numerous Berlin districts may have to go to the polls again to re-elect the Bundestag.

A first draft for a draft resolution of the Election Review Committee of the Bundestag provides for another vote in around 440 polling stations in the capital.

That was announced on Wednesday from the committee.

According to the information, the districts of Pankow, Mitte and Reinickendorf are particularly affected, but not only.

The newsletter The Pioneer first reported on the unpublished draft.

The elections for the Bundestag and the Berlin House of Representatives on September 26 were marked by numerous breakdowns and organizational problems in the capital (read more here).

These included incorrect or missing ballots, the temporary closure of polling stations and long queues in front of them, sometimes with waiting times lasting hours.

In addition, some polling stations were open well after 6 p.m.

However, according to observers, it will still be a few weeks before a decision is made on the final proposal for a repeat election in the capital.

Significant effects on the outcome of the election as a whole are not expected.

Under certain circumstances, however, new elections could result in individual Berlin MPs losing their Bundestag mandate again (read more ).

In addition to a repeat of the Bundestag elections in the approximately 440 polling stations, partial or complete by-elections to the House of Representatives are also possible.

However, the Berlin State Constitutional Court must decide on this.

The first oral hearing has been announced for the end of September.

According to the commission, a system collapsed on election day that was not up to the challenges of this vote - and whose collapse was foreseeable.

"This time we were in a situation in which too many dominoes fell over: individual phenomena that would not have been noticed in a normal election have turned into chaos," said Daniela Berger, Berlin's election officer.

"It was a stress test for the system - and it failed."
