Or not wait with the booster?

Corona and vaccination - Lauterbach is currently making recommendations on this connection that do not seem consistent.

Which strategy is the right one for the fall?

Berlin – In the context of the corona pandemic, the approaching autumn raises the question of how the impending increase in the number of infections can be countered most effectively.

The intended Infection Protection Act brings back known measures: this also includes vaccination.

Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) is clearly in favor of the vaccine – only when and for whom which, the recommendations of the SPD politician are somewhat confused in this regard.

Corona: Lauterbach draws a Covid perspective and refers to “adapted vaccines”

"Impostor", "panic animal", "lobbyist" - all of this can be read under Lauterbach's tweet, in which he warns that the corona pandemic is not over yet.

The minister referred to a “forecast” by Tom Wenseleers from the Belgian University KU Leuven, “a leading corona variant modeler”.

According to Lauterbach, this “is assuming that BA.2.75 could soon dominate in Asia, and BA.4.6 in the EU/US.”

In view of these prospects, Lauterbach states that booster campaigns with adapted vaccines would be helpful.

According to the current plan, these vaccines should be available from autumn.

But the minister's recommendation is largely met with resentment.

In addition to the general disaffection of the citizens with the pandemic, a recurring stumbling block is Lauterbach's own corona infection.

Lauterbach: Vortex about corona infection and contradicting booster recommendations from the minister

On the one hand, according to the criticism, Lauterbach's corona infection showed that compliance with all measures to prevent illness from Covid remained fruitless.

On the other hand, the fuss about the extent to which the minister is said to have disregarded the obligation to isolate is fueling the discussion about the further procedure for dealing with the pandemic.

Furthermore, the minister's post raises the question of what his specific vaccination recommendation for a booster is.

Recent news from a team of researchers that may have found the potential key to a universal vaccine against any variant of the coronavirus suggests waiting for such a vaccine to be developed.

The adapted vaccines announced for September also appear to many to be the means of choice for a booster.

As Lauterbach emphasized several times, "older people and patients at risk" should not "speculate on new vaccines", but should make use of the existing options.

If you look at the likely recommendation of the Stiko, which probably also advises against waiting for an adapted vaccine, it is striking: The commission generally does not recommend a booster for healthy people under the age of 60, since a further refresher "according to the current state of knowledge" has no benefit in " appreciable[em]" extent.

It is therefore not possible to definitively determine who the exact target group of the autumn vaccination campaign planned by Lauterbach should be and who should wait for the adapted vaccine.
