Solid, floating, glued, nailed... Parquet gives character to our interiors, but when it makes noise, it can become annoying. How to make the parquet no longer squeak? Our advices.

A charming asset of old apartments, the

parquet floor

can however become annoying and even embarrassing on a daily basis if it creaks.

What are the solutions to reduce the squeaking of the parquet?

Is linseed oil effective on squeaky hardwood floors?

We answer you.

Why does the floor creak?

Wood is a living material: it expands and shrinks depending on temperature and humidity.

Over time or due to improper installation, your parquet floor may creak.

In question ?

The working of the wood, its dryness, the friction of the blades, their poor fixing or uneven ground.

How to stop the floor from squeaking?

  • Repair squeaky parquet

    on joists

To repair a

solid parquet floor

that squeaks due to time, it is important to check the type of installation.

If your old floor is nailed or screwed to joists (the joists that support the floorboards), one solution is to repair the fixings and/or add more if the boards are long.

By keeping the boards well fixed to the joists with nails, friction is reduced and therefore the noise of the squeaky parquet.

  • Laminate flooring that squeaks, how to fix it?

Laminate flooring that squeaks is often the result of a poorly executed installation or a lack of flatness of the floor, but also of woodworking.

You can then have the installation resumed in the appropriate places by a professional, which represents an expensive but sometimes essential solution.

Before that, tips consist in limiting the friction of the blades of a floating floor to reduce its squeaking.

How to reduce the squeaking of parquet?

  • Use talc as a binder between the blades

If the floor squeaks, it's often because the boards are rubbing against each other.

A trick is to coat the joints between the boards with talc when the parquet creaks underfoot.

This simple method is very effective and inexpensive: just coat the joints with talc then walk heavily on the floor so that the talc is dispersed everywhere between the boards.

The miracle powder will act as a binder and reduce, or even eliminate, squeaking noises.

  • Marseille soap flakes: a natural remedy for squeaking floors

Using paraffin for squeaky parquet is a common practice, but be careful, it is a flammable product.

We will therefore prefer Marseille soap in flakes to lubricate the wood and reduce the friction of the blades.

It is a natural product, non-flammable and respectful of your parquet: just insert the glitter into the interstices of the parquet, as with talc, so that they act as a shock absorber between the boards.

  • Cover a creaking floor

Another solution is simply to cover the squeaky floor, for example with a thick wool carpet, in order to absorb the pressure exerted on the blades and thus attenuate the movements of the floor and therefore the noise.

But it is also a way to preserve the wood from external aggressions so that it works less.

  • Regulate room temperature and humidity

The parquet squeaks because of its expansion.

One solution is therefore to maintain as much as possible a constant temperature, thanks to a thermostat on the heating devices in winter and good ventilation in summer, as well as a regulated hygrometry (ideally between 45 and 60%) with a humidifier / dehumidifier so that the wood works as little as possible.

What oil for a squeaky floor?

  • A maintenance oil adapted to nourish the parquet floor

A maintenance oil adapted to your parquet, whether solid, engineered, vitrified or oiled, will nourish the wood and protect it from external aggressions.

It is therefore an effective way to reduce friction, since the wood will become less dry and will be less subject to repeated expansion and contraction.

  • Linseed oil on a floor that is too dry

Linseed oil, for example, is ideal for protecting squeaky parquet due to too dry wood.

Both nourishing and protective against humidity, it will also give the parquet an elegant matte finish.
