Drama in Spain: More than 20 people were injured today (Wednesday) with varying degrees of injury when a passenger train caught fire due to a large forest fire burning nearby.

At least three people were seriously injured after they had to jump from the burning train in order to save their lives.

The train made its way from the city of Segunto in the province of Valencia towards the city of Zaragoza, stopped and the locomotive driver prepared to back out.

Even before the train came to a stop, passengers began to escape from the cars by breaking the windows and jumping out.

Two of the train's passengers were so seriously injured that the rescue forces had to evacuate them from the scene by helicopter to a nearby hospital.

A 10-year-old girl was also among the injured with lighter degrees of injury. The most seriously injured in the incident is a 58-year-old woman and there is serious fear for her life.

"After the passengers realized that they were surrounded by flames, they returned to the vicinity of the train and were rescued from there. Some of them suffered very severe burns," said the spokesperson of the Spanish railway company.

The president of the province of Valencia, Himo Puig, told the local media today that more than a thousand people were evacuated throughout the province due to the wave of fires affecting the region and that nearly fifty thousand dunams of natural woodland, forest, agricultural fields and private property have caught fire since the fires began last week.
