Penzberg – After a lengthy application process, the decision has been made: Penzberg will be awarded the State Garden Show 2028.

The Bavarian Environment Minister is on the phone.

You don't get that call every day.

Thorsten Faithr (FW), Minister of State for the Environment and Consumer Protection, has good news for the third mayor, Hardi Lenk (SPD) - and also for Penzberg.

The city has been awarded the contract for the State Garden Show 2028.

“We hope to make the city even more beautiful and greener.

This is an opportunity for Penzberg," said Lenk to the Rundschau.

Mayor Stefan Korpan (CSU) has already heard the good news from his deputy.

Apparently, Lenk spent a lot of time on the phone that Wednesday morning.

Korpan, who was on vacation, was euphoric: "The work was worth it.

There will be cycle paths and footpaths that my grandchildren will still walk on.” In the future, there will be local recreation in the middle of Penzberg.

"We are all totally satisfied and have played through all possible scenarios," says Lenk.

preparations begin

But now the city has to do some preparation and planning work over the coming years.

According to Lenk, tenders should begin in 2025.

According to city architect Justus Klement, Penzberg has offered 40 hectares of development space, but ten hectares are actually needed.

According to a press release from the city, it is quite possible that the focus will be on the development of the railway arch, as well as on the area of the so-called Bachmeile and the Müllerholz.

As part of the award, Minister of the Environment Glauber also commented on the award: "State garden shows provide answers to the challenges of climate change in urban areas: They bring green oases into the cities, promote local recreation and enable nature experiences on site.

Urban climate protection is a central task of the present.” In addition to Penzberg (2028), Günzburg (2029), Nuremberg (2030), Schrobenhausen (2031) and Langenzenn (2032) were also selected.

The next state garden show will take place in Freyung in 2023.

Hoping for additional funding

The jury has made its decision, now it's the city's turn again: According to city master builder Justus Klement, the State Horticultural Show Society will now launch a competition in which open-air investment offices nationwide can participate.

"The competition will then show what will actually be built with the funding," says Klement.

This may include path connections, recreation areas or even bridges.

A project company will be founded to manage the budget, which will also manage the funding.

The city of Penzberg has to use ten million euros so that the Landesgartenschau-Gesellschaft can bring in a maximum of five million euros in funding.

However, master builder Klement is also speculating on funding from other pots, such as urban development funding.

In addition, the Garden Show 2028 should of course also generate its own income - entrance fees or indirect income by boosting local gastronomy, retail and regional tourism.
