Nasser Shoofan, head of the Beekeeping Division in the Homs Agriculture Directorate, announced that the production of honey in the current season has decreased compared to the last season.
Because of the volatile weather conditions and frost waves that affected the reality of beekeeping and reduced the proportion of honey production at the governorate level.
In a statement to SANA reporter, Shofan said that the number of breeders at the governorate level is about 1,300, and the total number of cells is 32,000, while estimates of the initial production of honey are about 175 tons.
Shofan pointed out that the division's cadres provide instructions to beekeepers about existing pests and how to treat them, in addition to ways to prevent diseases and increase production in quantity and quality.
A number of beekeepers talked about the conditions and reality of work, including Asaad Asaad from the village of Dardaria in the western Homs countryside, who recently indicated that the current season was very bad for beekeepers, and the death rate of bees for some of them exceeded 60 percent due to the lack of flowering seasons, the phenomenon of bee migration and the difficult weather conditions that exacerbated the The phenomenon of the death of large numbers of bees.
Regarding the directorate’s role in the production process of hives between Chaufan, that the directorate has a beekeeping center that produced 250 kg of anise and black seed honey this season, which was picked from 55 cells and placed in the division’s warehouse until the selling price is determined by the Ministry of Agriculture, pointing out that the center is working To revitalize its work by increasing the number of hives in it to reach 132 hives of hybrid Syrian bees this year.
On the reality of the center’s work, Chauvin said that work is being done to increase the production of parcels and sell some of them to breeders and citizens wishing to buy parcels, as 58 parcels were sold during this year at a value of 75 thousand pounds per parcel, consisting of four tires, two nursery tires, one honey tire and one stretched wax tire, with the aim of encouraging the Beekeeping, especially the Syrian hybrid, pointing out that there is an increasing demand for registration to purchase bee parcels from the center.
