While the conflict between China and Taiwan is brewing, several Bundeswehr Eurofighters from Bavaria start a military exercise in the deepest Pacific.

Not everything goes according to plan.

Munich/Singapore/Melbourne - It is the German Air Force's most ambitious mission for a long time and its largest relocation since it was founded in 1956. What's more: the military exercise even runs parallel to the obligations in the transatlantic defense alliance NATO after the Russian war of aggression on the Ukraine.

As part of the "Rapid Pacific" operation, six Bundeswehr Eurofighters took off from Neuburg an der Donau in Bavaria towards Asia and Oceania.

The fighter jets are accompanied on their mission by three A330 tanker aircraft and four Bundeswehr A400M transport aircraft.

A total of around 250 air force soldiers are involved in the delicate operation.

The military operation is sensitive in that the crews will take part in the Australian armed forces' multinational exercises "Pitch Black" (air combat) and "Kakadu" (naval warfare) in August and September.

And this while the conflict between China and Taiwan simmers further north in the Pacific.

The German fighter jets from Bavaria are also supposed to hold maneuvers with the Singapore Air Force.

Separated from the South China Sea, Singapore is even closer to the conflict region.

This is exactly where the Bundeswehr machines are to land before continuing towards Australia.

Short visits by the air forces to South Korea and Japan are also planned.

The Air Force Inspector, Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz, called the operation "the largest and most challenging transfer that the Air Force has ever seen."

The pilots would have to refuel their jets around 200 times in the air on the flight to Asia.

Air Force Chief Gerhartz himself will fly a Eurofighter from Australia to Japan as part of the exercise - i.e. past the South China Sea and Taiwan.

: "The air force can not only protect NATO's eastern flank in the Baltic States, but also cooperate with friendly nations in the Indo-Pacific.

For us there is no either-or!

We are sending the clear signal that the Air Force can be deployed quickly and worldwide, even with several orders to be fulfilled at the same time.”

German Air Force in the Pacific: Australia, Singapore, South Korea and Japan are NATO partners

Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) recently said during a visit to Neuburg an der Donau: "We stand by all those who stand for our values such as democracy, freedom and security, and we are willing to get involved. “It’s about supporting “value allies”.

Australia, Singapore, South Korea and Japan are NATO partners in the Pacific region.

Already at the start of the operation, however, there was a first failure.

During a planned stopover in the United Arab Emirates, one of six combat aircraft remained on the ground due to hydraulic problems and now has to be repaired, an air force spokesman said.

However, the sixth Eurofighter should be ready for the start of the multinational exercises in Australia.
