The president of Turkey had a complex relationship with the Jewish state that mainly suited his personal ambitions • Even during periods of relatively good relations, Erdogan made statements comparing Israel and Israeli statesmen to Nazis

Prime Minister Yair Lapid spoke today (Wednesday) with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, Israeli flights to Turkey will resume next month.

It was also reported that the leaders thanked each other for the development of relations between the countries, and congratulated each other on the decision to return to full diplomatic representation.

Turkey-Israel relations have known ups and downs over the years, with one of the main turning points in relations being the rise to power of the incumbent President Erdogan.

In 2009, an international conference was held in the city of Davos in Switzerland.

The late President Shimon Peres defended Israel's actions during Operation Cast Lead.

Following this, Erdogan complained that they did not give him enough time to respond, and left the seat in anger while telling Peres: "You are killing people."

That year, relations continued to deteriorate, and in Turkey TV series with an anti-Semitic aspect were broadcast.

Against this background, Turkish Ambassador Ahmet Oguz Celikul was summoned to a reprimanding conversation with Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon.

The incident attracted media attention when the Turkish ambassador was forced to sit on a low chair.

On this occasion, Ayalon told journalists: "The main thing is that they see that he is sitting low and we are tall, and that there is only one flag here."

However, the event that undoubtedly blew up relations between Ankara and Jerusalem was the Marmara Affair.

Since the takeover of Gaza by the terrorist organization Hamas in 2007, the attack on the border crossings and the kidnapping of the soldier Gilad Shalit - Israel has imposed a blockade and naval blockade on the Strip.

In 2010, the Turkish extremist organization IHH decided to send a flotilla to Gaza in order to break the naval blockade.

The flotilla consisted of six vessels, the largest of which was the Maui Marmara ship.

On board were hundreds of passengers and dozens of crew members.

Against this background, the Navy launched Operation Winds of Heaven 7 in order to stop the flotilla.

Initially, the forces called for a flotilla, and called for the vessels to turn to the port of Ashdod to unload the humanitarian equipment.

The calls were not answered - and the fighters of the 13th fleet had to take control of the vessel.

In "Mavi Marmara" severe conflicts developed.

In the end, ten soldiers were injured, two of them seriously, while ten of the ship's passengers were killed and dozens of others were injured.

At the beginning of 2013, thanks to the mediation efforts of US President Barack Obama, then Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with Turkish President Erdogan and expressed regret for the incident. In a statement published by the Turkish News Agency, it was stated that "Erdogan accepted the apology on behalf of the Turkish people."

However, the harsh statements of The Turkish president did not stop. During Operation Rock Ethan in 2014, Erdogan attacked MK Ayelet Shaked, claiming that she "reminds him of Hitler" and that Israel is "committing genocide against the Palestinian people".

Only in 2016 was a reconciliation agreement reached between the countries after six years of disconnection, but Erdogan, for his part, continued to attack Israel.

Only with the beginning of the economic crisis in Turkey about two years ago, Erdogan suddenly changed his tone.

In December of the same year, he stated that Ankara was interested in "tightening relations".

Relations later warmed during a series of visits by senior Israeli officials to Turkey, led by President Yitzhak Herzog.
