Donald Trump's calculations worked: In the US state of Wyoming, Liz Cheney lost her seat in the House of Representatives after losing the Republican primary.
She will therefore not be able to stand again in the November elections.
But Trump may have rejoiced too soon over his rival's defeat.
Because Liz Cheney is now considering running for the US presidential election in 2024.
“That's something I'm thinking about.
And I will make a decision in the coming months," she told US broadcaster NBC News on the show "Today."
Recently, Cheney was often asked if she could imagine running in 2024.
The Conservatives had previously left this open.
The daughter of ex-Vice President Dick Cheney emphasized that for the next few months she will first concentrate on finishing her work as a member of Congress.
The 56-year-old will no longer be a member of the House of Representatives from January.
In the primary elections in Wyoming on Wednesday night, she admitted her defeat to her party opponent Harriet Hageman, who had been supported by Trump.
Hageman will be running for the Republicans in the Wyoming constituency in November's congressional elections.
Cheney said she also has a lot of work to do on the investigative committee into the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol, where she is the vice chair.
She will ensure that the people of the country understand "what is at stake," Cheney promised.
The Republican Party must return to the principles and values on which it was founded, Cheney said.
She will do whatever it takes to keep Trump out of the White House.
Only a broad front of Republicans, Democrats and independents can defeat Trump.
Trump, who claims without proof that the 2020 election victory was stolen from him, has so far left open a new candidacy.
