Al-Hasakah-SANA
The season of planting the yellow corn crop in Al-Hasakah Governorate witnessed a remarkable turnout by farmers, exceeding the area implemented three times as planned.
The head of the Plant Production Department in the Directorate of Agriculture, Engineer Jalal Bilal, said in a statement to SANA reporter that the yellow corn crop is one of the intensified crops that are usually grown after harvesting wheat and barley crops.
Bilal pointed out that the planned area for planting corn during the current season amounted to 890 hectares, while the actually implemented area amounted to 3025 hectares, with an implementation rate of about 340 percent, in light of production estimates of about 4,500 tons, noting that the quantities produced from the corn crop are marketed in the local markets in the governorate. In the presence of a strong buying market for the crop, which is a human food and supplementary fodder for some types of livestock.
For their part, a number of farmers confirmed that the reality of the crop’s growth is good and no insect infestations have been recorded to date. However, there are some difficulties that farmers face, the most important of which is the difficulty of securing fuel and fertilizer for the crop.
Farmer Abdo Al-Shaher from the countryside of Amuda district said: “The cultivation of corn in the region is witnessing a good demand, as it is grown in the fields along with some other types of vegetables, indicating that it is one of the crops with good yields and that generates remunerative profits for farmers, as the average production per hectare is about 10 tons of corn. In light of the presence of a good marketing market in the province.”
Al-Shaher pointed out that the majority of the people sell the crop at the beginning of its production as a food item sold in the governorate’s markets, and then pick the rest and dry it in the traditional way under the sun in the absence of an automatic dryer in the governorate, where corn is sold after drying if it is of a good quality as a food item that enters the industry Chips and popcorn materials or as fodder for low-quality items.
