In recent years, there have been telecommunications fraud groups in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Thailand, which lured Chinese people to work there with high salaries. However, many people were "sold as piglets" after arriving in Po, and they had to pay high ransoms to get out.

The reporter came into contact with three Hong Kong residents trapped in Myanmar, some of whom were "resold" many times, including to the notorious "KK Park".

"01 Investigation" has several episodes in a row, uncovering the shady secret of human trafficking by fraudulent syndicates. The first episode starts with the experience of the trapped Hong Kong people. Some of them claimed to have witnessed the escapee being shot and covered in blood.

The Chinese Embassy in Myanmar responded to "Hong Kong 01" that it had contacted the Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs for rescue, but said that the Myanmar side could not find the trapped people.

However, the area where the victim is located has always been controlled by the local ethnic military government. Before and after the military coup in Myanmar, it was difficult for the central government to reach the local area. The Global Anti-Fraud Organization (GASO) also bluntly stated that it was difficult to rescue.

Shot by multiple resale witnesses who escaped

Mr. A (pseudonym) went to Mae Sot, a border city in northwestern Thailand to find friends in June this year. After arriving in Po, he boarded a car with his friends and was sent to Miao, a neighboring country of Myanmar, which is only 15 kilometers away. In the Myawaddy area, "everyone in the car was held hostage and went across the river to Myanmar, another country."

In just one or two months, Mr. A was "sold" to different camps, where soldiers with guns were stationed. He said that he could leave if he was asked to pay a ransom, but each time he was resold, the "ransom fee" would be Overweight, from the initial 10,000 US dollars (about 78,000 Hong Kong dollars), to 30,000 to 40,000 US dollars (about 230,000 to 300,000 Hong Kong dollars).

For each additional month spent in the camp, an additional 10,000 RMB will be added.

Forced to commit an online scam to defraud 5 million yuan to get out

He is currently forced to commit internet or telecommunication fraud in the camp. "If I can cheat HK$3 million, I can let me out of the gate of the camp. But the gate is not safe. There is anarchy here. Guarantee personal safety and send me back to Thailand.”

Mae Sot, Thailand, borders Myawaddy, Myanmar, and victims are transported to Myanmar by road.

Attracted by high-paying jobs in Thailand, he was escorted into the car after walking out of the airport

Mr. B (pseudonym) was attracted by an online job advertisement in August this year, and was arranged by a mainlander to work in Thailand with free air tickets.

"It's a clerical job in an office building, with a monthly salary of more than 40,000 yuan. I mainly do online publicity, and I get commissions, so my monthly income can be quite substantial."

However, after transferring from Bangkok to Mae Sot, as soon as he left the airport, he was forced to board the car by several big men and sent to Myanmar, where he is currently trapped in the camp.

"If the ransom is not paid within three days, I will be sold, and the ransom will be increased to $20,000 after the sale."

Taken away after being lobbied to open a bank account in Thailand

The reporter also received help from a friend of the third trapped Hong Kong person, saying that Mr. C (pseudonym) was lobbied to open a bank account in Thailand in July, but after arriving at the local airport, the person in charge of receiving him instructed him to follow the author by phone. "Security guards" dressed as soldiers leave.

Mr. C was taken to a camp in Myanmar, and was asked to sign a document, promising to work there for one and a half years.

He was reluctant to sign at first, but because the soldiers around him were all armed with firearms, he had to give in.

Mr. C was also told that he could leave after paying a ransom of about 250,000 RMB. Otherwise, he would have to make money for the local electronic fraud group. He is now being fined by the electronic fraud group every day for failing to find customers.

Several trapped Hong Kong residents pointed out that it was difficult for their families to raise the ransom, and they were worried that even if the ransom was paid, they would not be able to get there.

Thailand and Myanmar are bounded by the Mekong River, with Mae Sot in Thailand at the top and Myawaddy in Myanmar's Kayin State at the bottom.

Barbed wire in the camp area, limited movement and phone use

Fragments from some of the scam camps show that these camps are full of barbed wire and have a rudimentary environment with bunk beds.

Trapped people can have limited activities in the park, and earn living expenses by doing fraud every day, so they can use the phone to a limited extent.

They pointed out that the camp is mainly composed of Chinese, some from mainland China, Taiwan, Malaysia, and they have also met other Hong Kong people.

The Myanmar fraud camp is located in the Shuigou Valley Special Economic Zone in Kayin State, controlled by the local ethnic army, and operated by Cambodian Chinese She Zhijiang through a Hong Kong company.

Local warlords control multiple electrical fraud parks

Their location is the Shuigou Valley Special Economic Zone in Myawaddy, Kayin State, Myanmar, which has always been controlled by local ethnic warlords.

They have been resold to several different camps in the district, including the "KK Park".

She Zhijiang, the mastermind of "KK Park", holds a Cambodian passport and changed his name to "TANG Kriang Kai". Through the Hong Kong-registered company "Asia Pacific International Holdings", he operates casinos and other businesses locally. He is wanted by the Chinese and Interpol. Arrested in Thailand.

Global anti-fraud organization: the target begins to shift to Hong Kong people

Joy, a member of the Global Anti-Fraud Organization (GASO), also bluntly said in an interview with "Hong Kong 01" that it is difficult to rescue, "They began to look for Malaysians and Taiwanese, because these people were rescued and transferred to Hong Kong. Hong Kong may be able to, with the help of China's strength, but what we saw was that there were people kneeling outside the embassy and they ignored it because there were too many people and they didn’t know how to save them.”

The staff of the Chinese embassy in Myanmar responded to "Hong Kong 01", admitting that they had received help from Hong Kong people, but were unable to rescue them.

Chinese embassy in Myanmar admits failure to rescue

The trapped Hong Kong people said they had contacted the Chinese embassy in Myanmar for help.

The staff of the embassy accepted an interview with "Hong Kong 01" and admitted that they had received help, but they were unable to rescue them: "We immediately sent a message to the Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant departments, inviting the Myanmar side to make every effort to find and rescue the people at that time. However, the Myanmar side later We replied that we could not find it after various searches by the relevant departments, and we have notified the Hong Kong Immigration Department of the relevant situation.”

A family member of the trapped person reported to the police in Hong Kong, and the police listed it as a "police investigation".

The Immigration Department said that since January this year, the "Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Abroad Group" has received help from the family members of 17 Hong Kong residents, who are suspected of missing contact in Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

The team understands that 12 of the Hong Kong residents have left the area safely.

After receiving the relevant assistance, the team immediately assisted the applicant to report the case to the local police according to his wishes, and also reminded the applicant to report the case to the Hong Kong Police Force.

The team will continue to maintain close contact with the family members of the remaining five parties, the Hong Kong Police Force, the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, the Chinese embassy in the local area and the consulate-general and follow up the case.
