A march scheduled for Wednesday August 17 in Niamey against the presence of soldiers from the Barkhane force in Niger has been banned and its organizers have announced that they have decided to launch a petition demanding their departure instead.

The M62 movement, which brings together civil society organizations and describes itself as "

peaceful

" and committed to "

the dignity and sovereignty of the Nigerien people

", indicates in a press release that, "

respectful

" of the law, it "

takes note of prohibition

" of his march.

He announces that he has therefore decided "

to launch an online petition against the presence of Barkhane in Niger

", the text of which requests that the regime of President Mohamed Bazoum "

make her leave our country

", as well as "

any other evil force whose the objective is to destabilize and/or plunder the resources of our country and of the Sahel

”.

Fight the jihadists

Pushed out of Mali, the French Barkhane force - whose last soldier left this country on Monday - will nevertheless remain present in the Sahel, especially in Niger, one of France's main allies in this region.

In April, Nigerien deputies had largely voted in favor of a text authorizing the deployment of foreign forces on the territory, in particular French, to fight the jihadists.

At the end of November 2021, a Barkhane military convoy that left Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire to join Gao in Mali was first blocked and stoned by demonstrators in Kaya, Burkina Faso.

He had resumed his journey before being again interrupted by angry demonstrators in Téra, in western Niger.

Three of them had been killed, in shots attributed by the Nigerien government to its forces or to French forces.

The investigations had not been able to determine with certainty who were the perpetrators of the shootings, the Nigerien authorities however believing that they were probably French.

France and Niger had both announced that they wanted to compensate the families of the victims.
