Porsche 911 GT3 RS, the RSR of the road

NEW - With the new generation of the GT3 RS, never has a road-going Porsche benefited so much from the lessons of competition.

According to Porsche, more and more sports car enthusiasts want to turn on the circuit without racing.

For them, the manufacturer from Zuffenheusen has concocted a new generation of the 911 GT3 RS which is a challenge to the passage of time.

This car allows you to go by road to a circuit, to challenge the stopwatch and to offer sensations and performances close to a racing car, then in the evening to return home by road.

Upon discovery in the pit lane of a circuit, one wonders if this GT3 RS is still a road car.

To tell the truth, it looks like the 911 RSR that rages in the queens of endurance events.

The aerodynamic concept is clearly inspired by competition models.

The front bonnet incorporates two huge extractors to cool an unprecedented radiator, the fenders do not completely cover the wheel arches.

Up front, the sidewalls round out near the front wheels to improve airflow.

At the rear, the shield also fits behind the wheel arch.

Aerodynamic lips, scoops in the wings and small fins at each end of the roof complete the impressive device.

The work of the engineers would be nothing without the presence of the gigantic rear wing.

A major first for a production Porsche, the GT3 RS introduces DRS.

Activated via a button by the driver, this system reduces drag and increases speed in a straight line, by modifying the angle of inclination of the wing.

All the devices provide aerodynamic downforce of 409 kg at 200 km/h and 860 kg at 285 km/h.

This is twice as much as for its predecessor and three times as much as for the GT3.

The fin also has an emergency braking function.

Camped on rims with central nut of 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the rear, the RS shoes Michelin Pilot Sport tires with soft rubbers.

The open rims reveal the imposing braking system based on carbon ceramic discs 408 mm in diameter at the front and 380 mm at the rear.

They're gripped by six-piston calipers in the front, four-piston in the rear.

Compared to the GT3, the tracks have been widened by 28 mm at the front.

The chassis rests on controlled double wishbone suspensions at the front, and multi-link at the rear.

Not derogating from formula RS recipes, the latest addition to the family of exclusive 911s sees its weight reduced to 1,450 kilos thanks to the use of plastic reinforced with carbon fibers to make the doors, the front fenders, the hulls seats and aerodynamic elements.

The lightening treatment goes hand in hand with an increase in potency.

The naturally aspirated 4-litre flat-six now boasts a trifle of 525 horsepower, a gain of 15 hp compared to the old model.

The engine is mated to a 7-speed PDK gearbox whose gearing has been completely revised.

100 km/h is now reached in 3.2 seconds.

For the most keen on circuit trips, the GT3 RS will be available to order with the Weissach pack including in particular a roll cage, racing seats, safety harnesses and magnesium rims.

Deliveries of this jewel of technology will begin at the end of 2022.
