Rudy Giuliani, a former lawyer for former President Donald Trump, went on Wednesday to testify before a grand jury in Atlanta for the criminal investigation of an alleged attempt to alter the result of the 2020 election in Georgia to steal the victory from Joe Biden.

Giuliani, a former New York City mayor, received a court summons last week to appear in person and without the presence of journalists before the grand jury investigating the case.

Giuliani's lawyers said Monday that he is a "target" of the investigation, according to attorney Robert Costello.

The Prosecutor's Office had initially notified that he was required as a material witness.

Arriving at the Fulton County courthouse in a limousine with his attorney, Robert Costello, he declined to comment to reporters waiting there: "A grand jury, if I remember correctly, is secret," he said.

"They ask questions and I'll see [if I answer]," he added, according to The Associated Press news agency.

Grand jury rules prohibit those appearing to testify from speaking about their testimony, but that rule does not affect those who come as witnesses.

Giuliani was a federal prosecutor, so he may be fully aware of that regulation, according to the agency.

The grand jury, convened by Fulton County Attorney Fani Willis, subpoenaed Giuliani in early July as a key witness in its investigation into what she said were "coordinated attempts to unlawfully alter the outcome of the 2020 election." ”.

The subpoena alleges that he made false statements during legislative hearings in Georgia alleging "widespread voter fraud" in the state.

A judge ordered Giuliani to testify after he failed to appear at a July 13 hearing to contest his subpoena.

Asked if Giuliani would still appear before the grand jury, Costello told NBC News, "We'll be there."
