Telekom is expanding its fiber optic network in Schaftlach and Piesenkam.
This was an issue in the Waakirchner municipal council.
There one hopes that the Telekom advances the expansion quickly.
Waakirchen
- Telekom is expanding its fiber optic network in Schaftlach and Piesenkam.
"That's very gratifying," said Mayor Norbert Kerkel (FWG) in the Waakirchner municipal council.
The company is driving the expansion at its own expense.
Every house in the two districts will have a connection.
The municipality does not have to contribute financially, but is asked to support the expansion.
"It's about letting Telekom into the streets and publicizing the campaign on the website," Kerkel reported.
The decision to provide this support was unanimous.
"We're making good progress"
"We are making good progress with this," said Kerkel, with a view to the efforts to offer fast Internet throughout the municipality.
There is a reason why the Telekom expansion is limited to Schaftlach and Piesenkam: Vodafone has always provided fast connections in Waakirchen.
This division has become established, noted Kerkel.
Doubts about rapid implementation
In his estimation, Telekom will complete the expansion by 2024 or 2025.
The local council feared that the implementation of the plans could take longer.
Some of what Telekom announced in 2014 has not yet been completed, reminded Carsten Brockmann (ABV).
Again and again there was talk of a lack of staff, problems with suppliers and other things.
Rudi Reber (ABV) agreed.
Unfortunately, the municipality has no leverage to enforce the rapid expansion.
"And then people with stovepipes look up at the mountains again."
With the decision to support the community at least have the chance that something will happen, said Kerkel.
To become active in this area is hardly feasible for the community and therefore not an alternative.
Great demand expected
Telekom is already promising one thing: in the first nine months after the installation of the lines, customers can book the house connection without the costs of just under 800 euros that would otherwise be due.
Those who join later will be asked to pay.
"That's a great offer," said Alfred Finger (CSU).
In Marienstein, Vodafone also raised the connection fee for the first house connections.

Of course, there is no obligation to connect to the fiber optic network, Kerkel made clear.
However, he assumes that there will be lively demand in the two districts: "For many, the psychological strain is great."
