The wind complicates the Vall d'Ebo fire, which is still out of control

2022-08-17T05:16:53.676Z

The affected area of 9,500 hectares will increase in the next few hours. The flames in Bejís, in the south of Castellón, force the eviction of its 400 inhabitants, as is happening in the nearby municipalities of Toràs and Teresa

The flames do not let up in the Valencian Community.

The Vall d'Ebo forest fire, in the northeast of Alicante —which has already burned 9,500 hectares in a perimeter of 65 kilometers and has forced the eviction of 1,500 residents— is still very active and the forecast of "erratic" winds complicate its extinction.

Another fire in Bejís, in the south of Castellón, has forced the deployment of 20 aerial resources, from the Generalitat, the Government, and other communities such as Castilla La Mancha, Murcia and Aragón.

Its perimeter is 20 kilometers and has affected 670 hectares of an area of high ecological value, as explained by the Minister of the Interior of the Valencian Community, Gabriela Bravo.

Both this municipality, with about 400 inhabitants;

such as the nearby town of Toràs, with around 250 residents, and Teresa, with 245 registered,

The fire has forced to cut the CV-712 road, which joins Vall d'Ebo with Pego, and during the morning the municipality of Benimassot, with 96 registered residents, has been evicted.

Most of the affected population is relocating by their own means.

Only 20 relocated have spent the night in the provisional shelters of the Red Cross installed in Pego and Muro de Alcoi, according to data from this organization.

Part of the affected area in Alicante had already burned in 2015, although there were places that had already recovered.

About twenty aerial means and more than 300 people work in the extinction work, including firefighters from the Alicante Provincial Council, the Generalitat Valenciana, forestry brigades of the Government, and members of the UME.

More information

The Vall d'Ebo fire remains uncontrolled, reaches 9,500 hectares in a perimeter of 65 kilometers and poses more evictions

The Minister of the Interior of the Valencian Government highlighted first thing in the morning on Cadena Ser that the increase in humidity in Vall d'Ebo had helped to cool the area, although the distribution of that humidity, in a perimeter of 65 kilometers , has not been proportional.

Despite this, the situation remains, according to Bravo, "very worrying" as it is a highly complex fire due to the orography of the area and the amount of smoke.

Working all night and we continue. Along with this fire in Alicante, there have been, almost simultaneously, three others that have forced media to be diverted: in Calles (Valencia), controlled this Monday;

Les Useres (Castellón, with 800 hectares affected and already stabilized);

and Bejís, who remains in an “extremely complicated” situation.

Up to 200 members of the Castellón Provincial Firefighters Consortium, the Generalitat and the UME have worked on the Bejís fire overnight.

In addition to the eviction of several municipalities in the area, the flames have also forced the section of the CV-235 highway between Bejís and Teresa to be cut.

In total, seven roads in the Valencian Community remain closed at different points in the community.

There are also a dozen injured on a train affected by the fire, who are being treated.

Three of them are in serious condition due to burns.

One has been transferred by helicopter to the La Fe hospital in Valencia and the other two by the Emergency Medical Assistance Service (SAMU), one also to La Fe and another to the Clínic hospital.

Another person with less serious burns has been referred to Sagunt.

"The important thing now is the people and paying attention to the authorities," the president said.

The level of pre-emergency risk of forest fires is extreme throughout the Valencian Community, except on the coast of Castellón, which is low.

The progress, from different points, of the forest fires registered in the community, has led the fire service attached to the Generalitat Valenciana to issue a statement asking the troops to be enjoying their vacations or days off , if they deem it appropriate, that they join the operations voluntarily "in view of the extraordinary situation of simultaneity" of the fires.

The president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, has guaranteed this morning that the municipalities affected by the flames will have aid to "recover and relaunch" the burned land.

Puig has traveled to the affected area in the afternoon, and has reported, from Viver —a town near Bejís— that two firefighters have been injured in the Bejís fire.

At three in the afternoon there was a change of direction in the wind that has ruined the entire strategy for extinguishing the fire.

In fact, the advanced command post was located in Bejís, and has been moved to Viver, where weather conditions are expected to change this Wednesday and allow the containment of the flames.

Very complicated situation right now in #IFBejis.

Eviction of the town is in progress.

Moncayo, in a favorable situation

The other major fire last weekend, that of Añón del Moncayo (Zaragoza), remains in a favorable situation, once stabilized and the means of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the autonomous communities have been withdrawn, as well as a section of the Military Emergency Unit (UME).

All residents evacuated by the fire in Aragon, except those in the district of the Santuario de la Misericordia, already have permission to return to their homes, as reported by the regional government.

Faith of errors

In a previous version of this text, it was mistakenly stated that the Alicante fire affected 12,500 hectares.
