Fraud syndicates in Southeast Asia are increasingly rampant. Some Hong Kong people were lured to Cambodia, Myanmar, and Thailand and lost contact. The Security Bureau said that the Immigration Department and the police received 17 and 12 cases respectively, and reported that they were illegally detained.

The Immigration Department has assisted 12 people to leave the area. It is reported that most of the Hong Kong people seeking help are from Cambodia and Myanmar.

It is understood that the Police Organised Crime and Triad Bureau will follow up on the incident.

Since January this year, the police have received 12 requests for help, reporting that they were detained in other places due to scams such as job hunting and online romance.

When the police receive relevant reports, they will maintain close contact with overseas law enforcement agencies, and contact overseas law enforcement agencies through the Interpol platform to exchange information and assist in investigations.

The police appeal to the public not to easily believe online job advertisements or messages, and to be wary of the ways that claim to make quick money, as well as positions that pay exceptionally well regardless of education or work experience.

The Security Bureau stated that it attaches great importance to the recent suspicion of Hong Kong people who have been lured into Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries and detained to engage in illegal work.

Since January this year, the Immigration Department and the Police have received 17 and 12 requests for assistance respectively.

The Security Bureau pointed out that after receiving the relevant assistance, the "Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit" of the Immigration Department immediately provided assistance to the local police according to the wishes of the person seeking assistance. Among them, 12 Hong Kong residents have left the area safely.

The team will also actively follow up on cases that have not left the local area for assistance, and will continue to maintain close contact and follow up cases with the family members of the parties, the Hong Kong Police Force, the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, and the Chinese embassy/consulate general in the local area.

The Security Bureau continued that when the police received relevant reports, they would maintain close contact with overseas law enforcement agencies, and contact overseas law enforcement agencies through the Interpol platform to exchange intelligence and assist in investigations.
