The Department of Prevention in the Daraa Agriculture Directorate warned of the false tobacco plant after noticing the presence of one plant near the Panorama roundabout at the northern entrance to the city of Daraa.
Head of the Prevention Department, Engineer Hassan Al-Smadi, said in a statement to SANA reporter today that the department dealt with the plant with complete extraction due to its danger to humans and animals and because it contains an alkaloid compound more toxic than nicotine and is called anapsin, indicating that swallowing any amount of this compound results in fatal poisoning to humans and animals, including: That's sheep and poultry.
He added that the false tobacco plant grows randomly next to the roads and represents a health and environmental disaster because it spreads quickly and produces millions of seeds, and thus it is afraid that it will colonize the lands and expel the original plants.
Al-Smadi called on the citizens to unite to eradicate this plant and to muzzle the flower clusters with plastic bags and tightly closed them during the uprooting of the plant to avoid more seeds falling on the ground and to cover its remains with herbicides so that it does not re-grow. General herbicides can be used in the early stages of growth.
Al-Smadi said that the false tobacco plant is an evergreen tree that grows to a height of up to six meters and has many branches, and its leaves are alternate, carried on smooth, juicy petioles and covered with a waxy layer of oval or spear shape, greenish-bluish color, and yellow-green flowers arranged in the form of pink clusters.
Swallowing a quantity of false tobacco causes an increase in salivation, a feeling of dizziness, dizziness, disturbance of movement, vision and hearing, a feeling of fear of light, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, convulsions, nervous and muscle spasms, and death.
